Selecting the Dishwasher for Your Kitchen Remodel

When it comes to purchasing a dishwasher for your kitchen remodel in Washington DC, many people don’t give much thought into choosing a model. Trusted brand names, whether the dishwasher is energy efficient are always considerations beyond the finish color. What we want, and understandably so, is a dishwasher that will clean our dishes. It is only upon doing some comparison between models and brands, that we realize there is more to this seemingly simple appliance than meets the eye. Suddenly there is a long list of features we need to consider in making the decision about this important kitchen appliance.

Placement and Style

The actual amount of space that your dishwasher takes up in your kitchen or washroom should be your first consideration. Aesthetically, you want a dishwasher that blends well with the rest of your décor. This may mean matching the finishes of your other appliances or having a cabinet panel installed on the dishwasher to allow it blend in with the cabinets. A standard dishwasher measures 24 inches in size; these are the models you will find in most home kitchens. However, there are also drawer dishwashers that split the top and bottom drawers. These dishwashers pull out exactly like an ordinary cabinet drawer. You can have a single drawer, two stacked, one above the other, or if you want, any number of drawers in different locations. Dishwasher drawers can eliminate the bending over for loading and emptying required with the typical full size dishwasher. Another way to eliminate bending over to load and unload your dishwasher is to have the dishwasher installed on a platform that raises it off the floor a few inches. This requires a custom enclosure, but it is one option that some homeowners have been choosing.

Matching a Model to Your Needs

Top end dishwashers will effectively do it all. You’ll find those that have settings for washing your delicate items like crystal, as well as soaking and scrubbing cycles for pots and pans. They may have delayed starts so you can set the dishwasher to run during the middle of the night while you are sleeping or the middle of the day while you are at work. A sanitizing cycle is another frequent option on high-end models. For maximizing the space within the dishwasher, look for a model that has adjustable racks or fold-down tines. These great features will allow you to fit more dishes, and dishes of various sizes into the washer, by better utilizing available space. These flexible space features can be especially important on the more compact dishwasher models. One of the features that many people look for in a new dishwasher is noise reduction. You will find most models come with a noise rating. Generally, you will pay more for the quietest models, but if your kitchen is open to the rest of the home, having the lower noise level may be worth the price. Another difference you’ll find in dishwashers is the interior finish materials. Generally the interior choices are plastic or stainless steel. Again, the shiny stainless steel interior will generally be a feature that will reflect a higher price, but you will also be assured that the interior will never crack, as some plastic dishwasher tubs have been known to.

Other Important Considerations

Like any other appliance, dishwashers need occasional maintenance and repair. Some models have self-cleaning filters and components, whereas others require a more hands on approach. For those models with removable components, it is best to get an idea of the assembly before making your purchase. If possible, ask to see the instruction and maintenance manual, so you can estimate the amount of labor involved in cleaning your dishwasher. As well as which, you will want to avoid putting heavily soiled dishes in the appliance, so as to reduce the chances of causing blockages or damaging the dishwasher. In many respects, purchasing a dishwasher is similar to purchasing a car. When it breaks down, the mechanic may have the parts readily available for a quick service. In some cases, however, they may have to order parts in from far distant lands. In any case, it is better that you find out before purchasing a particular model. It is always tempting to go with the most financially economical option, but we recommend that you make your purchase through a dealer that you know to be reputable. Ask them about service and guarantees, so you know what is covered and what is not. Also, by purchasing from a trusted dealer, you know that your new dishwasher meets federal standards of compliance.

Now that you are armed with all this knowledge on what to look for, it is time to find out if your shortlist of dishwashers makes the grade. A great way to achieve this is by asking family and friends, or checking online reviews to see what other consumers are saying. By taking the time to consider your options and make the best purchase, your dishwasher will serve you well for countless years.
